An Examination and Analysis of Determining Factors Affecting the Realization of Happy City Indicators (Case Study: Metropolitan City of Isfahan)

Abstract

Introduction: One of the most significant and fundamental topics that requires continuous investigation pertains to the level of happiness and vitality of citizens within urban environments. The aspiration for happiness constitutes one of the essential human needs and concerns, and urban spaces play a crucial role in enhancing a city’s attractiveness and fostering citizen contentment.
Data and Method: This study was applied in its objective orientation and adopted a descriptive-analytical methodology in terms of its nature and investigative approach. Data collection was conducted through both documentary analysis and survey-based methods. The statistical population encompassed two distinct categories: residents of Isfahan and experts. The sample size was determined using Cochran’s formula, yielding 384 residents and 40 experts. Stratified cluster random sampling was employed for resident selection, while purposive sampling was utilized for selecting experts.
Results: The results derived from the confirmatory factor analysis model revealed that, among the social dimension indicators, two factors emerged as most significant: enhancement of life expectancy and increased social interaction and neighborhood connectivity. Within the economic dimension indicators, two principal factors were identified: elevation of household economic income and land and housing price dynamics. Regarding the physical dimension indicators, two critical factors were determined: regularization of informal and peripheral settlements and diversification in building facade materials. Among the environmental dimension indicators, two essential factors were identified: strengthening of pedestrian-oriented design and optimal public spaces, and augmentation and enhancement of urban parks and green spaces through appropriate design interventions. These eight factors collectively represent the most influential determinants in achieving and realizing the happy city concept at the Isfahan metropolitan scale. Furthermore, the findings indicated that Isfahan demonstrates relatively satisfactory conditions regarding social, physical, and environmental indicators of the happy city framework, whereas economic indicators reflect unfavorable conditions. Moreover, a statistically significant difference exists among the 15 municipal districts of Isfahan with respect to the attainment of happy city indicators. Comparative analysis of computed means demonstrated that districts 1, 6, and 5 achieved the highest mean values, whereas districts 14, 8, and 11 registered the lowest mean values.
Conclusion: Given the identification of the most critical social, economic, physical, and environmental factors affecting the realization of the happy city concept, urban administrators and decision-makers must, through the incorporation of expert and specialist perspectives in management and policy-making domains, establish the necessary prerequisites and conditions for the implementation of happy city indicators
