Analysis of the Components Affecting the Sociability of Urban Spaces (Case Study: Haj Rais Alley, Bushehr)

Abstract

Introduction: The presence or absence of people in public spaces and territories as a representation of human behavior will lead to the emergence of signs of participation. Accordingly, the current study aimed to extract and identify the components affecting the sociability of public spaces; analyze and explain the correlations among them, validate the proposed model; and finally, evaluate the sociability performance of the case under study according to the components approved by the experts.
Data and Method: The current study was applied in purpose and descriptive-analytical in nature. A quantitative method was used to analyze the data. To survey the theoretical literature and identify and extract the components influencing the sociability of urban spaces, a review of primary sources was conducted. The field research involved distributing questionnaires, while the model testing employed the binomial test in SPSS and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using LISREL. The statistical population of the study consisted of the entire population of Bushehr, Iran, totaling 252,000 people. Using Cochran's formula, the sample size was estimated to be 150 individuals. Participants were selected using purposive sampling from among those with a perception of Haj Rais Alley experienced over time.
Results: The statistical indicators showed that the proposed model fit closely with the data and, as anticipated, the physical, activity-social, and perceptual-semantic components explained the concept of sociability. Besides, each indicator could effectively measure these components.
Conclusion: Among the components affecting the sociability of Haj Rais Alley, access and connectivity, visibility, sociable furniture, active land uses, the space’s capability to attract different age groups, and flexibility were regarded as unfavorable from the point of view of the visitors. Furthermore, recommendations were provided to improve the status of these undesirable components.
